Roll of Honor
Operation Neptune
D-Day

June 1944

Normandy cemetery 4a.jpg

IX Troop Carrier Command was involved in Operation Neptune, better known as D-day,  son June 6 and June 7, 1944. the mission was to drop paratroopers and land gliders on the Cotetin Peninsula of Normandy.

The fatal casualties were buried in field graves, at local cemeteries of a nearby village where their plane crashed or at a temporary cemeteries near Ste.-Mere-Eglise.

After the war, the casualties were collected at the large cemeteries atoverlooking Omaha Beach. the Brittany Cemetery commemorates Troop Carrier casualties of the Normandy invasion as well. A few casualties were buried at Cambridge in England.

As the families were given the choise to have the remains of their loved ones being brought home, the majority of the victims were reburied in the USA.

These 133 men died during the invasion. I have added three non-Troop Carrier members here. Two of them acted as dropmaster on the resupply mission of June 7. The other odd one is a war correspondent who also perished on 7 June.
